Under the title of: Disgusting Things I've Seen Today:
1) picture of parasite infestion-aka- foot-long worms emerging from a child's ass
2) a picture of someone's head after it has been blown off by a shotgun
3) a lung with osteosarcoma metastasis- aka- boney tissue had begun to grow in the lung and form hard nobby bonelike structures.

I started and finished "How to Be Good" by Nick Horne. Its about a GP who feels like she is a virtuous person because of her job- and then one day her husband comes home and realizes he is shit and starts inviting homeless people to stay in their house and she realizes that she only wants to be virtuous professionally, not as a regular thing in her life.

It's such a hassle to be a girl. Hair, clothes, makeup, worrying about wrinkles and being fat and other things... my mom recently said to me that I look very well put-together when I try, which essentially means that I spend most of my time wandering around looking like a bag lady. This morning before I went out I looked at my bathroom and looked at the things I would have to do before I left in order to look presentable and I almost felt defeated.

This morning I shadowed an Ob-Gyn. She took me into the diagnostic rooms with her and I watched while she assessed pregnant women (there wasn't any Gyn- to it this time). I was able to feel stomachs and you could feel the head and hear the heartbeat- it was amazing!! I am on a huge high and very excited.

Today we had an MD come in and talk to us about thrombosis: he had a very thick Austrian accent. He showed us several slides of blood clots in the brain: after some snickering, some guy piped up in the back- "Is that a tumour on that section?" Which led the MD to respond...(finish joke yourself)

A website to make you feel rich. When I'm making the big bucks in about 10 years I will be one of the 0.45% richest people in the world. To compare, right now at my paltry annual income of $5000 a year, I am already one of the world's 14% richest people.

Ah, thanksgiving, yet another holiday to enjoy with your weird relatives who discuss Star Trek ad nauseum and insist on telling horrible german jokes. Good times.

On Monday I'm giving a talk at Westgate, my old highschool. I'm going to be talking about what it is like to be a science student, what classes to take, what to expect, and where you can go with a science degree. To all of you out there in computer land- if you were to start University all over again, what would you like to know about school? What was a huge surprise? (I have my answers for this, but I'm trying to get a broad range.)

Last night I went to see Lost in Translation with Laura. Best. Movie. Ever. Run, don't walk to the theatre.

In non-medical news. Roy, of Sigfried and Roy, is in critical condition after being attacked by one of his tigers. This verges between sadness and hillarity. Doesn't it seem as if this is a Simpson's episode?

Another week, another story about cancer patients. We had two patients come in and talk to us, and needless to say, it was the most sad thing EVER. Especially the man with lung cancer- it is such a horrible disease. TO all of you who smoke- even occasionally- if you were to have heard this man, you would have given it up immediately! QUIT- QUIT NOW ALL OF YOU!!

I passed my midterm!! Hooray, with a 75%! Sounds a little low, but really I'm right there in the middle (mean= 73, median = 73 sd+/- 6) AND six people failed (<60) so it was harder than one might think. Hooray for passing!

In other news: school is AWESOME! Most of the time I can't believe I'm here.

Steve leaves for Europe today. Good luck and godspeed.
